PERFORMANCE ENCOURAGING CONVERSATION, COMMUNITY AND A DEEPER UNDERSTANDING COMES TO CHAPTER THIS JUNE

PERFORMANCE ENCOURAGING CONVERSATION, COMMUNITY AND A DEEPER UNDERSTANDING COMES TO CHAPTER THIS JUNE Chapter is delighted to welcome artists Jo Fong and Sonia Hughes to Cardiff this June. Jo and Sonia present Neither Here Nor There at Chapter on Friday 7 – Sunday 9 June at 7pm. Neither Here Nor There will also be presented in Welsh for the first time at Chapter on Saturday 8 + Sunday 9 June at 4pm. Performances in Welsh will be hosted by Eddie Ladd and Sara McGaughey.
Neither Here Nor There is a series of conversations that happen over six minutes. Jo, Sonia, Eddie and Sara ask and answer questions about how it’s all going, big unfathomable questions about the world, small questions about the state of your garden. Weather permitting, there will be a walk, small talk, a bite to eat, tables, chairs, questions, talking and listening.
Born out of a frustration with superficial connections and the binary nature of public debate, Neither Here Nor There creates the space for deeper conversation and time for reflection. The audience are asked to share something of themselves and to truly listen to others. Serious subjects are introduced with warmth and openness, creating a shared understanding and connection. Previous audience members have described the show as “Inspiring, heartfelt and engaging” and “Thought provoking, cathartic and quite lovely”.
Talking about the show’s inspiration, Jo said: “The UK has taken in a communal inhale of breath. The unknown and uncertainty is tangible. Neither Here Nor There was born as a response to short, sharp and quite ridiculous Brexit banter – the idea of slowing down, taking time and listening. The work encourages the hearing of many voices, of forming understanding and the suspension of judgment or assumptions. It steers us away from our often time scripts or tailored and repeated anecdotes. We

share something of ourselves yet at the same time learn in equal measure about others. Practicing the act of listening is good for Wales and the world.”
Jo Fong and Sonia Hughes describe themselves as two middle-aged award-winning international provincial artists. They are successful artists individually and together, with previous collaborations including numerous productions with internationally renowned, Manchester-based performance company Quarantine as writer, movement director and performers. They’ve collaborated with National Theatre Wales and Jo’s Creative Wales Award project, the research from which culminated in two productions - Ways of Being Together, involving 48 collaborators, and Neither Here Nor There, a two- hander.
Neither Here Nor There was inspired by research undertaken by Frank Bock and Katye Coe. It was commissioned by Chapter and Live Art UK Diverse Actions, and is supported by the Arts Council of Wales. Neither Here
