Dylan at the Fringe

THE nephew of Richard Burton will be staging a Sir Anthony Hopkins-directed one-man show about Dylan Thomas at this year's Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

Guy Masterson will be appearing in Dylan Thomas - Return Journey on August 18. Sir Anthony is not expected to be in Scotland for the event.

The one-off performance is among a number of events at the fringe commemorating the 50th anniversary of the death of the Swansea-born poet.

Masterson will also be staging his own unique performance of Under Milk Wood, which was premiered in Edinburgh almost 10 years ago.

Although there are 69 people living in Thomas's fictional village of Llareggub, Masterson performs all of the colourful characters himself.

The programme for this year's fringe festival was unveiled yesterday and this year more venues will be used than ever before - despite a serious blaze which devastated three regular festival sites six months ago.

A public toilet, a red Ford Escort, a stepladder, a bus and a lift are among the unusual venues which will be used when the 57th fringe is staged from August 3 to 25.

There will be performances from a host of stars such as singer Kelly Osbourne, comedians Rhona Cameron and Jo Brand and entertainer Paul Daniels.

Paul Gudgin, director of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, said, "At the end of last year, we were faced with one of the most serious problems in our organisation's recent history, as images and reports of a city consumed by fire were appearing across the world.

"I am extremely grateful to the Edinburgh community for continuing to prove itself as the perfect host, providing a record number of spaces to present our world-famous programme."

This year's fringe presents 21,594 performances of 1,541 shows by 668 companies in 207 venues - 24 more venues than last year.

The world premiere of a show called Toast will be performed on a stepladder and No Room On Top, a comedy show, can be seen in a double decker bus.

Tickets for the fringe go on sale on June 16.
