![]() Sherman Theatre’s Main House Christmas show has become one of Cardiff’s essential seasonal treats, presenting family favourites with an ensemble of actor musicians performing live on stage. A favourite through the generations, The Snow Queen is an enchanting and sparkling tale. This production combines a spectacular set and costumes, superb storytelling, and a spellbinding original score to create a magical theatrical experience for everyone aged 7+. The new adaptation has been created by writer, lyricist and composer Conor Mitchell. Conor has previously composed the music for Sherman Theatre’s Main House Christmas productions of The Wind in the Willows and The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe. Conor creates innovative music theatre with The Belfast Ensemble of which he is Artistic Director. Conor’s bold contemporary opera, Abomination, A DUP Opera has just premiered to acclaim. The Snow Queen will be directed by Tessa Walker, who in 2017 directed Birmingham Rep’s The One Hundred and One Dalmatians. She said, ‘The Snow Queen is a magical, moving and entertaining adventure bought to life by a hugely talented cast of actors, musicians and puppeteers. A newly commissioned adaptation with a brand-new epic score, this is a story of friendship, bravery and of light following the darkest of times.’ The Snow Queen is the story of Gerda who sets off an epic adventure to find her friend Kai. It’s a journey which will ultimately lead her to the Snow Queen’s palace. On her way she will meet extraordinary characters and visit magical places. The actor musician ensemble will be performing live on stage, bringing to life the popular characters from the well-loved story. Playing the title role of The Snow Queen is Stephanie McConville (Little Shop of Horrors, Sell A Door Theatre Company). Anni Dafydd (The Ugly Duckling / Yr Hwyaden Fach Hyll, Sherman Theatre & Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru) will play Gerda and Ed Parry (Industry, HBO) will play Kai. The cast is completed by Rachel Nottingham (Between Us, The Mermaid), Hanna Jarman (The Magic Porridge Pot / Hud Y Crochan Uwd, Sherman Theatre; Merched Parcus, S4C which she also created and co-wrote), Jo Servi (The Color Purple, Curve Theatre & Birmingham Hippodrome), Morgan Llewelyn Jones (The Accident, Channel 4), and Grace O’Brien (35 Diwrnod, Boom Cymru). A timeless tale with love and friendship at its heart means The Snow Queen is set to carry on the tradition of the Sherman being the perfect outing for families this Christmas. For younger families, Sherman Theatre will be staging a new production of The Ugly Duckling / Yr Hwyaden Fach Hyll (2-31 December).
