International dancers converge on Cardiff for unique collaboration |
|
DANCE practitioners from all over the world will converge on Cardiff in a unique programme of collaborative contemporary dance this month. Welsh Independent Dance, in collaboration with Chapter Arts Centre in the city, will bring together seven emerging international dance artists from seven different countries for the world premiere of Dance Worlds which will be presented over two evenings. Audiences will be given the opportunity to view the work of selected artists from Cardiff, Berlin, Luxembourg, Vienna, Istres (France), Ljubljana (Slovenia) and Montreal. Following the dual premiere at Chapter on January 9 and 10, the works will be presented in each of the cities culminating in Montreal. Representing Wales is Sandra Harnisch-Lacey. Her work is inspired by the Tanztheater tradition and she is interested in combining and integrating dance, theatre, music, film and text. Her piece - created through Welsh Independent Dance's Dance Bytes programme, More Than Just - will open the programme and is a physical and stirring duet inspired by the real life story of two East Germans escaping into the West during the Cold War era. Gerhard Maass, from Berlin, brings his Alte M nner (Old Men) to the city. His interests lie in showing a different view of society by abstracting every-day pedestrian movements. Alte M nner looks at the contemplation of one's own immobility and confronting changes through the world around us, and the reaction to those changes. Tania Soubry from Luxembourg, is tipped to be one of the leading figures within her country's dance scene and has already shown talent for choreography. Her new work, Elle ne dort jamais mon enfance, is a duet that uses an original sound score and projected images to enhance the two female figures. With Pedestrian Zone is Branko Potoan who hails from Ljubljana. The Slovenia-born choreographer began his dance career working with world renowned choreographer Wim Vandekeybus. Since that time he has formed a number of dance companies including a breakdance group and his current company, Fourklor. Oleg Soulimenko, from Vienna, presents the duet Album. In his performance the focus is put on the concrete human body in its imperfection and its actual conditions. Just like the historical individual photo album documenting different places, events, faces and persons, so the body in this performance shows the traces of the dancer's personal history. Yann Lheureux began his dancing career in 1986, creating hip hop dance shows. Since that time he has worked with a number of European choreographers and companies. Yann, from Istres, works with structured improvisations for both the dancers and the musician. A beautiful moment of complicity shared by four performers; two dancers, a musician, and the audience is the essence of Chasse-Croise. I'm Mobile is the title of the work by Montreal representative Karine Denault in which, with complex and relentless gestures, she questions and struggles within the space around her. |
