The British Antarctic Survey (BAS) and Arts Council of England are jointly sponsoring an Artists and Writers Programme, enabling a small number of scholars in the humanities to undertake projects in Antarctica. The purpose of the visits is to enable participants to experience the Antarctic, in order to convey, through their chosen medium, a better understanding of the unique features of the area. Artistic activities will complement and illuminate scientific research and help the public to appreciate the important contribution that Antarctica makes to the Earth’s functioning. Only UK nationals are eligible to apply. Two places are available each year during the Antarctic summer season. Successful applicants will have a serious body of work behind them. Applications will not be accepted from students. Applicants should provide a clear plan which explains why a visit to Antarctica is essential and what outcomes they hope for and identifies/defines the audience for their work and how they intend to reach the audience. Applicants will be expected to show active collaboration with publishers, galleries, theatres or similar organisations supporting access to audiences. Successful applicants will need to satisfy the BAS Medical Unit that they are medically fit before being accepted (including a blood test). Deadline for applications is 1st March 2004. For further information and downloadable application form, see the website. Detailed enquiries should be addressed to: Contact Info: David Walton |
