Young performers take centre stage

YOUNG performers from across Wales will come together to mark the success of an exciting initiative that has already benefited more than 5,000 Welsh children.

Celebrate Arts & Kids publicly acknowledges the invaluable support of organisations in Wales and puts the young people themselves firmly centre stage. Three groups will bring their own individual style of performance to this milestone event.

Out Cardiff is an educational and performing initiative for 14-16 year olds. A collaboration between Cardiff Council's schools service and the city's Sherman Theatre, it takes the teenagers out of the classroom to gain hands-on experience in a professional arts environment.

Also performing will be Fuse, Mold-based Clwyd Theatr Cymru's dance and movement group for children with special needs.

The third group bring music to the event. The Butetown Junior Schools Choir was set up in 1997 by singer and youth worker, Humie Webbe. The diverse cultures of the young singers are reflected in the music they perform and result in a unique sound.

The audience for Celebrate Arts & Kids will also hear from the initiative's patron, award-winning broadcaster, Kate Adie, about why she wanted to become involved.

The names of the Arts & Kids Cymru patrons will also be announced for the first time. They are BBC news anchorman Huw Edwards, Olympic gold medallist Tanni Grey Thompson, actors Ioan Gruffudd and Matthew Rhys, Judith Isherwood, chief executive of the Wales Millennium Centre, athlete Colin Jackson, actress Suzanne Packer and opera star Bryn Terfel.

Arts & Kids was established as an ongoing campaign at the request of the Prince of Wales in 2002. His desire to provide every child in the UK with an opportunity of directly engaging with the arts has been made a reality by the organisation Arts & Business.

With support from the Arts Council of Wales and the Millennium Commission, Arts & Business Cymru has, to date, overseen 21 exciting projects that have involved children with the performing and visual arts, many of them for the very first time.

Celebrate Arts & Kids will be at the Sherman Theatre on Saturday from 6pm.
