YOUNG PEOPLE TURN OUT TO BE TOP DOGS

YOUNG PEOPLE TURN OUT TO BE TOP DOGS Students on the Acting Out Cardiff programme and the young performers in the Sherman Youth Theatre will be presenting two brand new productions at the end of this month and in April. Both productions will be taking place in Venue 2 in Cardiff’s Theatre for Young People, The Sherman Theatre.

Acting Out Cardiff is an alternative education initiative for young people aged between 14 and 16 run by The Sherman Theatre and Cardiff Schools Service. Top Ten will be the first public performance for the new Year 10s who came up with the main idea behind the production in collaboration with Bristol based theatre company, Bocadalupa. The piece is set in a modern computer game, where players must overcome the trials of school life in order to reach the final level. The students have been working throughout the Spring term to create this fresh piece of work. Acting Out Cardiff will present Top Ten on Thursday 25th and Friday 26th March at 7.30 and tickets cost £2.

Dam Dogs is loosely based on Quentin Tarantino’s cult film Reservoir Dogs and will be performed by an all-female ensemble from the Sherman Youth Theatre. The production will be set in “The Dog House”, a fictional club run by the Dam Dogs and will be a gritty tale about the greed and pride of the characters that the cast have created. The production has been directed by Phillip MacKenzie, who is Director of Youth Theatre at the Sherman, and well-known film-maker and director Clive Flowers. The cast have been rehearsing for a number of weeks and are key to the creative process. Phillip MacKenzie said:

“The challenge for Clive and myself has been to transpose the Tarantino world into a world of teenage girls that is authentic and believable. Adapting the fragmented narrative of the original story into something cohesive with equally compelling characters has been tough. For these past weeks we have been steadily uncovering what their world is and letting it speak through light, music, movement and finely honed performances of our teenage ensemble. It is a difficult piece that is being attacked with imagination and courage by our young cast."

Dam Dogs will be performed on Friday 16th, Saturday 17th April & from 22nd to the 24th April at 8pm and tickets are priced at £3.

Tickets for both productions can be purchased from the Sherman Theatre Box Office on 029 2064 6900.
