ELEN TO DEVELOP THE ARTS IN CAERNARFON

Cwmni Tref Caernarfon has appointed a local singer who works as a Music Therapist in Gwynedd to be responsible for developing the arts at the new Creative Enterprise Centre, which will open in Victoria Dock next year.

Elen ap Robert has been appointed as Arts Development Officer for Galeri, the new centre, and will be responsible for developing a programme of artistic activities, which will appeal to a wide-range of the community.

Originally from Cardiff, Elen moved to North Wales fifteen years ago and has now settled in Felinheli. She started her career as an opera singer and has taken part in productions with well known companies including the Glyndebourne and the Welsh Opera Company. After graduating in music at the University of Sheffield, Elen went on to study a Post-graduate in Singing at the Guildhall College of Music and Drama in London.

Since leaving college, Elen has been performing as a soprano soloist and has given a number of premiere performances of the works of leading composers in Wales, including Dilys Elwyn Edwards.

As well as singing, Elen also shares her expertise with other young musicians at the University of Bangor’s Music School and at the William Mathias Music Centre. Elen has also qualified as a Music Therapist at Cardiff’s College of Music and Drama. “I work with children who have special needs by using music to promote development in communication skills, mainly autistic children,” Elen explained.

As part of her new post, Elen will be responsible for developing a series of cultural workshops, events and projects, which will give the opportunity for the community to meet and work with professional performers. She will also be responsible for administrating and developing the existing Caernarfon Arts Project, a scheme which provides dance, drama, voice and instrumental lessons to local children and adults. “This post combines a number of artistic fields that I have been involved with during my career,” said Elen, who is also an occasional presenter on S4C’s arts programme, Croma.

“It is an unique and exciting opportunity and I am really looking forward to working as part of a creative team in order to introduce new experiences to the local community.”
