| Diversions produce another treat for the eye and mind Jan 27 2003 The Western Mail - The National Newspaper Of Wales ONCE again director/choreographer Roy Campbell-Moore fuses Diversions' energy and movement material with his empathetic understanding of body language making metaphors accessible to everyone in the audience. Tough Love, premiered with high acclaim to a capacity audience at Aberystwyth Arts Centre, not only reveals emotional patterns with seductive intensity but also brilliantly juggles moods within the everlasting perpetual struggle of love. The company's talented dancers fill the space with theatrical lightness. Janis Joplin's songs are the perfect soundtrack for shifting this landscape between togetherness and loneliness. The opening is a surprise and catches the spectators' attention: gifted Emma Lewis sings live, a woman left lonely, finding herself in a street filled with strangers at the end of her song. Here the dance takes off with everyday people entangled in vanity reflected in an unseen mirror. They are followed by restless strangers walking in anonymity who suddenly meet and fall for each other. In one of the most impressive pieces (Little Girl Blue) the image is of lost love in a woman's mind and each movement seems to be as delicate as crystal. Tough Love, along with its other contrasting work Five Beginnings, is a treat for the eye and the mind. |
