We've all idolised a pop star at one time or another, and it's this common experience that makes 'Pop' such a hit. Focussing on four Cardiff schoolgirls on a mission to see their favourite American boyband '4-U' in action, 'Pop' is a rare animal: a Welsh language show that is warm, funny, and lively.

After a series of Welsh language plays that have provided audiences with some pretty heavy going nights out of late, 'Pop' comes as a breath of fresh air.

Elin loves '4-U', but when her plans to see their only Welsh gig goes belly up, she's "Absolutely gutted!" But things can only get better, and they certainly do when Elin (by hook and by crook) gets to meet Troy, her favourite member of the band (beautifully performed by four members of the cast surely cut out to form a real life boyband one day), and discovers the
secret he's been hiding from the press. No, Troy isn't gay, or a coke fiend, but Welsh! A closet Welshman!

The Sherman Youth Theatre's Welsh language wing does a brilliant job with Roger Williams's fine text. Performances are energised and quick witted. It was clear to all that here was a Youth Theatre that was enjoying itself with a play about a world that was familiar to them.

Carri Munn's direction is neat with some beautifully judged ensemble pieces - particularly the appearance of two American record company executives "Who for the purposes of tonight's performance will speak fluent Welsh... well, this is a drama after all!"

I understand (from this site's message board) that there are plans afoot to bring 'Pop' back to the stage for the Urdd Eisteddfod in 2001. I recommend it highly.
