Equniox Theatre- The Strange case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde , , August 14, 1997
Through the character of Jung, Mark Ryan maps out a pitch-black journey into the soul of a multiple personality that illuminates the inexplicable
fascination of serial killers.

An initial demonstration of Jung's capacity to control his specimen through empathy and hypnosis unleashes a relentless and ferocious retaliation from the demonic mind of the titular inmate. The only problem would seem to be finding an actor capable of playing this strikingly monstrous, dissociated animal who is chained to a spike centre stage and speaks a most challenging, dense and glorious text.

Lucky for Ryan that a young actor named James Westaway delivers what can only be described as a towering, accomplished performance that undoubtedly sets a standard for this year's Fringe. To offer more detail would only
detract from its stunning immediacy and complexity - better to see this one for yourself.

Try to keep one eye on Dyfrig Morris as Jung, every bit his partner's equal, who masterfully clings to the disintegrating remnants of his command. The text omits any opportunies for Westaway to regale with snappy one-liners, a la Hannibal Lecter. On the contrary, be prepared to
give this one your full attention.
