Paisagem - Memory Landscape

Patua Dance , Chapter Arts Centre, Cardiff , November 12, 2009
Paisagem - Memory Landscape by Patua Dance I was instantly fascinated when, some years ago now, I first saw the work of Patuá Dance.: Visually stimulating: the dancers were a mixture of various abilities. They engaged with the audience, who became integrated into the performance. Both performers and audience enjoying the experience of dancing. This I realised later was the ethos of Patuá Dance. That everyone has the ability to enjoy dance when encouraged. So it was with a respect for that ethos, of enabling and encouragement, that I attended Patuá 's latest work, Paisagem-memory landscape.

Having thought of Patuá's work previously to be fascinating, I experienced this latest work to be more challenging. Four dancers of various abilities, related their individual recollections of restriction and categorisation. Raising questions and attitudes of our acceptance of each other. At one point during the performance, the dancers directly confronted the audience: questioning. But then as the performance continued, those feelings of unease subsided as the dancers became integrated with each other. Myself as a member of the audience, no longer struggled with the sense of unease as I just enjoyed the dance.

The intertwining of human conditions, whoever we might be. I felt some barriers had been overcome and the fascination of Patuá’s work of inclusion still continues for me.
