Playwright - Pauline Mol (Netherlands).The Play was originally commissioned by the Dutch Theater Artemis and was developed via a devising process. Translator - Rina Vergano. Director - Kevin Lewis. Suggested Age - 12+ years. Reviewer - Thelma Good. Sizzling with energy and explosive power. Searing, sizzling with energy and explosive power, this production by Theatr Iolo is a cracker. There are three intense performances from Steve Hickman as the middle brother Gigi who misses his mother so much he can't bear mention of her, Emyr John as the youngest, simplest brother Benno who is revealingly the only one who can read and Tom Englishby as Big Boy the oldest appearing to be tough as he plays with a rope noose. You see the boys and fear for the men they might become with these portrayals in Bison & Sons honed and unrelenting lines. Played with the audience on four sides the brothers' predicament is gut wrenching in their sheer lack of family life revealed as they wait for their father to return from a visit to the bank. They argue and expose to our gaze a sparse life, in a script that never lets up. The brothers try to stay together even though any moment of warmth between them is quickly followed by a savage attack. As a deception of what a destructive home life is, and what neglect is like this play, superbly translated by Rina Vergano is shockingly and heartstoppingly realistic. Theatre for children and young adults is foolishly avoided by adult audience goers, above all don't make that mistake with this one. It's full of excellence all round.
