technical details | The 100-year-old Grade II listed building has been sensitively refurbished, preserving its architectural integrity whilst at the same time transforming it into a modern, multi-functional arts venue. A gallery, which originally formed an upper section of the church, is now The Gate’s main performance space, seating 250 in the preserved wooden pews on the original raked gallery floor. “Our aim was to really bring this superb building back to life,” says architect for the project, Rob Cruwys. “The architectural beauty of the old church enhances the whole arts focus in a way that we hope will inspire creativity and performance, and offer an enticing and intimate setting for audiences.” The Dance Studio, housed within the original body of the church, still incorporates the intricately carved pulpit and elaborate columns. An exhibition space is built around a beautiful glazed screen with a charming curved pew, and a second exhibition gallery has been constructed against the original exterior stone wall of the church which remains exposed. A Café-Bar nestles into the schoolroom of the old church and a new studio space will be home to a wide range of visual and performing arts activities. |
