THE final phase of the £6.9m development project at Theatr Mwldan in Cardigan is due to be completed this month. A new cinema and further foyer space will open. Construction of the project started in August 2002, and since then a new theatre has been built seating 250. The existing theatre has been refurbished and now seats 146. The project has also seen the creation of a new gallery, Oriel Mwldan, a studio/rehearsal space, bar, foyer, box office, administration workspaces and a cafe. The project has included the relocation of the Tourist Information Centre located to the venue's new foyer. And there have been improvements to the car parking facilities and road access. The project has also seen the creation of a new business, Creative Mwldan Creadigdiol, a multimedia centre which houses a variety of creative industries and is contributing to the regeneration of Cardigan. The first phase of the project, which included the brand new theatre auditorium and most of the foyer, opened on January 31 this year. Since then, the number of people visiting the theatre has increased dramatically. Dilwyn Davies, director of Theatr Mwldan and the man behind the project, is pleased with the end result. "A huge amount of work has gone into this project by many people over the past six years and it feels quite incredible to be nearing the end," he said. "I hope that Theatr Mwldan's dedicated customers, who have supported the Mwldan over the years and have been especially tolerant through the period of construction, will thoroughly enjoy the new venue." The official opening of the new Theatr Mwldan will be in September when a free weekend of events will be held. The first screening in the new cinema auditorium is Harry Potter And The Prisoner of Azkaban on May 31. |
