New arts venue opens its doors

IT may not be opening to the public for another five months but people stepped inside one of Wales' new arts venues for the first time yesterday for the unveiling of an artwork.

Artist Sebastien Boyesen was commissioned to make the sculpture in shaved aluminium for the foyer of The Riverfront in Newport.

Welsh Secretary Peter Hain joined Newport council leader Sir Harry Jones for the unveiling of the work, which is entitled Deus ex Machina.

Guests were also given a taste of the quality of music which will be staged once the venue opens in October with performances from harpist Deian Williams and members of Welsh National Opera.

As its name suggests, The Riverfront is on the banks of the River Usk in Newport.

The venue will house two theatre spaces, a dance studio, recording studio, gallery and function room, as well as a bar and restaurant.

The Riverfront will also contain a subterranean gallery and interactive display that will eventually house the mediaeval ship found at the site during construction work.

The opening season will be announced in July, with tickets going on sale in August.
