‘In Black and White’ is a theatre pastiche of early American films that has been devised through the exploration of early film narratives and the comedic physical language of silent movies, accompanied by American piano music that we associate with early cinema. The story is the realisation of the American Dream: a poor boy making good through a career in the movies, finding fame, money and true love with a touch of angst about an increasingly mechanised culture. En route through dream sequences, you will encounter old film favourites such as Buster Keaton, Charlie Chaplin and Harold Lloyd and enjoy some knockabout, slapstick sequences associated with their screen characters.

Barclays Bank, under its Community Programme, is providing sponsorship for Theatr Ffynnon to develop its activities and to fund this exciting new production. This year, in addition to the performances at the Melville Theatre, the Company will be performing at Abertillery Community Theatre on Saturday 19th June and Chapter Arts Centre, Cardiff on Saturday 26th June. Kathy Brown, Barclays Regional Community Manager for Wales, said ‘Barclays is delighted to be able to bring alive this latest production by Theatr Ffynnon. This is a great opportunity to make a valuable contribution to the local community. Through its Community Programme, Barclays as one of the UK’s largest corporate community contributors aims to achieve real benefit for the community and the Bank by supporting education, social inclusion, people with disabilities, the arts and the environment’.

Theatr Ffynnon gives time and space to people with learning difficulties to express themselves through drama, music, dance and the creative arts leading to performances which create opportunities to develop artistic skills, independence and integration within the local community. With support from Monmouthshire County Council and the WEA, the Company meets weekly at Raglan Community Centre under the direction of two professional theatre practitioners and an assistant. Having recently secured funding from the Arts Council of Wales, the Social Risk Fund and Torfaen Voluntary Alliance, the Company has begun workshops in Chepstow and Blaenau Gwent and will be extending its activities into Torfaen later this year.
