On the centenary of his birth the life of one of the twentieth century’s most influential Welsh language playwright, director, literary critic and academic will be celebrated in this year’s National Eisteddfod of Wales to be held in Newport next month. Dr John Gwilym Jones was born and bred in Groeslon near Caernarfon where he lived for most of his life until his death in 1988, aged 84 years. His profound influence is widely acknowledged by successive Welsh language writers, poets, academics and actors. Based on three John Gwilym Jones plays Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru – the Welsh National Theatre Touring Company will present a series of workshops and performances in the Theatr y Maes venue on the National Eisteddfod field. “It is right and appropriate that John Gwilym Jones’ invaluable contribution, especially to the development of modern Welsh language drama, is remembered to commemorate his birth,” said Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru’s Artistic Director, Cefin Roberts. “Although he excelled in other literary forms John Gwilym Jones’ plays are considered to be masterpieces in their own right,” he added. Every day during the week-long National Eisteddfod the ensemble of four Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru’s core actors will stage 45-minute-long lunchtime or afternoon performances. ‘Ac Eto Nid John Gwil’, which will include two of John Gwilym Jones’ short plays, Un Briodas and Dwy Ystafell, as well as an excerpt from his most memorable theatrical analysis of man’s struggle with his own fundamental nature, Ac Eto Nid Myfi.
