Football

It's 2006. England have won the world cup. (Thank f*** - otherwise we'd have to invade Iraq again.) Sir David Beckham is a national hero. His shirt has sold for 137,000 Euros at a charity auction. Three friends meet for dinner, two want sex, the other bought the shirt. It is almost ART.

Football, a new play by Welsh writer Lewis Davies, will premiere at Venue 13 during this year's Edinburgh Fringe Festival, in association with Made in Wales, Caribou House and Tinderbox. Venue 13 is the home of Welsh talent at the Festival and is run by the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama. The production will be performed Friday 6th to Saturday 28th August. There will also be a homecoming performance for the production at Chapter Arts Centre, Cardiff on 3rd and 4th September.

The play is set in 2006 and England have just won the World Cup. Jason, a TV chef, has just bought Sir(!) David Beckham's football shirt
or is it a jersey?

Clive is an unsuccessful writer who is the only one who really knows about football. Kate is the Sports Editor for a national newspaper - but all she gets to write about is what furniture the footballers have. These three friends meet up for one of Jason's famous meals but it does not quite go to plan - the sauce is burning, Clive and Kate are not getting on and can anyone really tell the difference between the real shirt and a fake?

Jason and Clive will be played by Welsh actors Martin Cole and Hywel Morgan. Martin Cole is probably best known for his roles in television dramas, such as '40' and 'Red Cap'. Hywel Morgan's last role had him playing none other than Tony Blair in 'Feelgood' at the Nottingham Playhouse. The role of Kate will be played by Suzanne Procter whose last appearance at the Edinburgh Fringe was in 'The Jolly Folly of Polly the Scottish Trolley Dolly'. It was a sell-out and received great acclaim. She has recently been filming 'Blackpool' for the BBC with David Morrissey.

Tickets for the production in Edinburgh can be booked from Venue 13's Box Office on 07074 201313 or booked online at www.edfringe.com.
