Half of the ‘opera cheaper than cinema’ tickets sold for Welsh National Opera’s first night in its new home at the Wales Millennium have been bought by people who have never been to opera before. Already a sell-out, WNO’s first performance on Friday 18 February 2005 of La Traviata, will mark the beginning of WNO’s ground-breaking pricing strategy for its WMC home. Details of the scheme were announced earlier in the year to plaudits from politicians, journalists and the public alike. The top price has been slashed by 25% and 250 seats are available each night at the bottom price of just a fiver, more than 37% down on current prices. Welsh National Opera’s determination to bring new people by keeping ticket prices low at the WMC is already proving a success, with the first night of the Summer season – Mozart’s The Magic Flute which opens in May –showing around 46% of the £5 tickets sold to newcomers. At the WMC the WNO will, for the first time, have its rehearsal, administrative, and performing base all in the one building. With an additional 750 seats available for each performance after the move, the company announced in March that it was confident that in spite of cutting its seat prices, it would still be able to increase its box office income in Cardiff. WNO’s first season in the Wales Millennium Centre will be sponsored by Associated British Ports and La Traviata by Coutts & CO, the private bank. Tickets for Welsh National Opera’s 2005 seasons at the Wales Millennium Centre are available by calling the WMC’s ticket and Information Hotline on 08700 402000. Online at www.wmc.org.co.uk or at the WMC’s Ticket Office in Mermaid Quay, Cardiff Bay. Information about WNO’s other UK performances is available on www.wno.org.uk or by calling 0800 328 2357. |
