CHANGING SPACES

The last ten years has seen a phenomenal growth in creative community building through the arts with new groups and activity springing up all over Wales. The current downtrend in funding which significantly threatens community arts in Wales has done nothing to diminish the desire which people have for the involvement in the arts. The arts forms and organisations which have traditionally been the prerogative of the elite are opening up for wider levels of participation.

The University of Glamorgan’s Changing Spaces Directory of arts in the community is an excellent way of finding what you want to find in the world of community arts. The wealth of information that the Directory will contain will make it the most comprehensive guide ever published to arts in the community in Wales. For individuals, for communities, for organisations and local authorities, it opens the door to opportunities to bring together all the elements for a successful creative endeavour. Whether you are looking for artists, groups to work with or funding to implement a project the Directory is a great starting point.

This approach to the arts contains and combines elements of :

Open Access – Participation in the arts is seen as a basic democratic right for everyone, particularly for those who, for whatever reason, have not engaged in the arts before
Active participation – This is work that recognises the right of people to participate in creative processes – to speak, to ask questions and to be heard
Collaboration – Working in a collaborative way, all of those who contribute to the work can be identified as ‘shared’ authors of the work.

If your work reflects these aims then it should be included in the Directory. Please contact Emma on erobinso@glam.ac.uk/ 01443 48 3637 to include your details.

The strength of the Directory is completely dependant upon the details that are recorded within it – please make it a useful tool and respond.

Be it working in any discipline, any sector or if you offer services and resources to those that do work in community arts – your details are needed.
