THEATR POWYS AND POWYS DANCE VOW TO REHEARSE ARGUMENTS
|
On Friday 8 October 2004, lead officers of Theatr Powys and Powys Dance were surprised to learn that a meeting of the Children, Families and Lifelong Learning Committee had agreed to recommend that all funding to Theatr Powys and Powys Dance should cease. This was despite recommendations from Powys County Council Officers that there be no reduction in budget to either company.
“The nationally and internationally recognised skills, specialisms and expertise of two companies who have served the schools and communities of Powys for 30 years with Council support could be lost forever.”
Ian Yeoman, Artistic Director of Theatr Powys
“Theatr Powys and Powys Dance provide an invaluable service to the county of Powys, it is imperative that their work continues.”
Councillor Louis Williams
Nikki Leopold (Theatr Powys) and Vicki Thomas (Powys Dance) are extremely concerned that the loss of funding from Powys County Council will threaten the substantial amounts of partnership funding which the companies currently attract to Powys from the Arts Council of Wales.
Amongst the varied services of Powys Dance, the company is currently providing community classes around the county, with opportunities to perform at regular DanceFests. The company is also starting an accredited dance training course for Early Years teachers which is available free of charge to schools in Powys. The company is housed at The Dance Centre in Llandrindod Wells, a building also extensively used by local community arts groups every evening of the week.
Theatr Powys is currently touring two Theatre in Education programmes to Powys schools in both English and Welsh languages. Youth Theatre rehearsals for Watership Down are well underway and a new youth arts initiative in the south of the county is scheduled to commence in February. A new play All at Sea will be touring to community and arts venues in Powys during December and January.
The energy and engagement in all of this work underlines for the companies the value and ongoing benefit of the services they provide. Theatr Powys and Powys Dance are confident and determined that these services will not be lost to the people of Powys and that Powys County Council will overturn this decision. They will be keeping all of their many supporters and participants fully informed.
