Arts Council defends strategy
|
Several companies across Wales have protested after being left out of its plans to provide theatre for young people. But the council said it is just trying to target funds more effectively.
The main criticism of the council's new strategy was that more funds were allocated to fewer companies to provide theatre for young people. The year 2000 has been designated the Year of the Artist, but at the end of 1999 when the Welsh Arts Council has been criticised on a number of fronts, the members are hoping for a more peaceful 2000.
Three theatre companies are appealing against the decision made by Arts Council.
Chief Executive Joanna Weston has defended the methods behind the strategy.
"The Arts Council aims to provide a national service," she said. (Click here for the Video clip of this item)
She also denied reports that she is to face a vote of no confidence from her staff in the new year. The council has welcomed a full scale review of arts funding by the National Assembly. The Assembly will launch a full scale review of arts policy in the new year
