Directors renew call for a National Theatre

Two of the most respected theatre directors in Wales have renewed their call for a National Theatre in Wales to be set up

Michael Bogdanov, the founder of the English Shakespeare Company, and Phil Clark, artistic director of the Sherman Theatre, have spelled out their proposals in an "alternative drama strategy for Wales"

Mr Clark said they had decided to write the strategy because "the Arts Council seem to be doing nothing but cutting back on theatre".

In the plan the authors write, "There has never been a better time in our history to unite our two languages and our orally rich and multi-culturally diverse society under one banner."

Under the strategy the national theatre would be federally organised, with permanent companies in Swansea, Cardiff, Bangor and Mold, building on existing structures.

The national theatre, say the authors, would work in partnership with the 22 local authorities in Wales, and a ministerial body, such as a Ministry of Culture.

"It would cost a lot", admits Mr Clark. He added "we are up front about that. That must be the next phase. We must sit with politicians and talk about the plans. We must talk about attracting more money, as they have done in Scotland and England".

Mr Clark said the first step was to establish a working party to research the feasibility of the plan and to assess accurately the talents and infrastructure already in place."

The six month feasibility study, say the author, would cost £50,000
