‘THE ELEPHANT MAN’
|
‘The Elephant Man’ is based on the life of John Merrick, a horribly deformed young man, who had been a freak attraction in travelling side-shows. He was found abandoned and admitted to Whitechapel Hospital in London under the care of a famous young doctor. Merrick changes from a sensational object of pity into the urbane and witty favourite of the aristocracy and literati but his belief that he can become a man like any other is a dream never to be realised.
Through the Gwent Young People’s Theatre, Gwent Theatre offers opportunities for young people to participate in a wide range of theatre activities under the direction of professional theatre practitioners. The youth theatre has a reputation for consistently high standards and has won acclaim for their recent productions of ‘What the Butler Saw’, ‘Alice’s Adventures Under Ground’ and ‘Tales from Ovid’.
Gwent Theatre provides a high quality Theatre in Education and Youth Theatre service for schools and communities that is creative, diverse and inclusive. Productions, performances and workshops activities create access and participation for young people to experience live theatre and develop an appreciation of the creative arts, provoke discussion of current issues and inspire an interest in the world in which they live.
