Diversionsí Spring Tour 2005

Diversionsí Spring Tour 2005 ‘One of the highlights of the evening was provided by the dance company Diversions’ (The Western Mail) This was just some of the praise Diversions, The Dance Company of Wales received for their performance in Wales Millennium Centres opening weekend celebrations. Now’s your chance to catch this much celebrated company as they present an exciting international triple bill on their Spring Tour.

‘The Most Outstanding Young Choreographer’ (Ballet International Year Book) - is coming to a venue near you. Stijn Celis, the renowned Artistic Director of Bern Ballet, Switzerland has created ‘Practice Paradise’. This wild and flamboyant production is accompanied by Chopins’ famous score for the ballet ‘Les Syphides’.

Director Roy Campbell-Moore has created ‘Between’, his twenty-first production, to coincide with our twenty-first anniversary. Played out against the quirky folk music of Welsh borders trio ‘Hoover the Dog’, ‘Between’ is inspired by Paul Seawright’s award winning series of night-time photographs of the Welsh Valleys, and with luscious and sophisticated movement - this is a truly unmissable work!

… And finally to celebrate Diversions twenty-first birthday, the Company will pay tribute to its’ roots by reviving the hit love duet of 1989, ‘Oakfield Ridge’. Choreographed by American dance artist, David Dorfman, this production is performed to quirky electronic beats and charts the emotional lifecycle of a relationship.

Choreographer Biographies

Scottish born, but educated in Australia, Roy danced with Scottish Ballet from 1975 until 1981. In 1983, he and the present Artistic Director, Ann Sholem, founded Diversions, The Dance Company of Wales, as a partnership with the Arts Council of Wales. His recent work mixes improvisation techniques with more ‘classical’ forms of contemporary dance, producing fresh and lively work from every performance.

DAVID DORFMAN – Oakfield Ridge
A native Chicagoan, David has been awarded four fellowships by the American National Endowment for the Arts. In 1989, Diversions premiered his ‘love’ duet Oakfield Ridge, a work which proved popular with audiences wherever it was performed. The work dissects a suburban couple, using a strong narrative which moves along in simultaneous joyous and poignant moods.

STIJN CELIS – Practice Paradise
Belgian choreographer Stijn Celis was born in 1964. Until 1997, he danced in companies such as the Royal Ballet of Flanders, Zürich Ballet, Le Ballet du Grand Théâtre in Geneva and the Cullberg Ballet. He has created ballets for the Cullberg Ballet, Ballet Gulbenkian, Bern Ballet, Ballet Mainz, Ballet Wiesbaden and Ballet Nürnberg. In a critics’ survey, he was mentioned as the ‘most outstanding young choreographer’ in the Ballet International 2001 yearbook.
