Opera Masterclasses in Cardiff

Some of the biggest names in opera will be putting young singers through their musical paces in June.

And while their comments might be just a little more tactfully put than we have come to expect from TV’s pop star groomers, the advice will be priceless.

Members of the judging panel from the BBC Cardiff Singer of the World will be sharing their years of experience on stage around the globe with this year’s contestants in the world’s greatest singing competition.

Star names including the renowned Wagnerian Dame Anne Evans, the legendary Marilyn Horne and German tenor René Kollo will be holding master classes at 11am and 3pm at the New Theatre, Cardiff on Saturday, June 18 – the eve of the prestigious BBC Cardiff Singer of the World final.

The judges select young singers who have not made the final of the main competition who they would like to work with in a master class on music they have prepared for the competition.

While the young singers do not have to accept the offer of a master class in front of a live theatre audience - and some don’t - most jump at the chance to work with some of opera’s biggest names.

The master classes take place between the final of the BBC Cardiff Singer of the World Rosenblatt Series Song Prize grand final on Friday, June 27 in St David’s Hall and the main title final the following night.

So it is possible, although pretty unlikely, that if the Song Prize winner has not made it through to the final of the main title he or she could be on the receiving end of the judges’ master class advice.

Tickets for the master classes are £5 for either the 11am or 3pm classes an dare available from either the New Theatre on 029 2087 8889 or St David’s Hall on 029 2087 8444 or visit

There are also some season tickets available for both the BBC Cardiff Singer of the World main competition and the Song Prize and tickets for individual concerts are now also on sale.
