Swansea’s Volcano Theatre Company is in the running for a major award at the Edinburgh Fringe this year. Philip Ralph, who performs the outrageous one-man show Hitting Funny (which he also wrote) is one of six nominees for the Best Actor Award. The Stage Awards for Acting Excellence at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe have been a highlight of the event since 1995. By recognising the best actor, actress and ensemble in theatre-based productions, they serve to highlight outstanding talent. Ralph’s outstanding performance as stand-up comic Chris Rich has already attracted widespread critical acclaim. By turns raw, angry, riotously funny, wincingly uncomfortable and deeply touching, Ralph portrays a comedian wrestling with his own material, the audience and the very point of comedy itself. The struggle is taking its toll on him, and, losing sight of the conventional boundaries of taste and decency, Chris Rich risks everything in pursuit of the funny. This "powerful, challenging, unmissable" show demolishes the cosy consensus of the stand-up gig and asks the audience to take responsibility for what they laugh at. The winners will be chosen by a panel of festival critics from The Stage, who will have reviewed more than 300 professional productions. The results will be announced at an invitation-only ceremony at The Fruitmarket Gallery, this Sunday (August 28) evening, and the awards will be presented by Catherine Comerford, Managing Director of The Stage. HITTING FUNNY is at 5pm at the Assembly Rooms every day until 28 August There is also a Fringe Diary, written in character by "Chris Rich", the stand-up comic in the play, at www.hittingfunny.com, where you can also find more information about the show.
