By Mike Kenny
With the Tsunami and New Orleans bringing mass flooding front of mind Sink of Swim, based on the great flood story Noah's Ark, provides a great starting point for children to discuss their thoughts and feelings on these recent disasters.
Autumn 2005 sees an extensive tour by the celebrated Quicksilver Theatre Company including a short season at London’s Arcola Theatre. For 27 years Artistic Directors Guy Holland and Carey English have presented top quality children’s theatre with plays for both younger children and the over 8’s.
They are reviving one of their favourite plays from the 90’s, Mike Kenny’s SINK OR SWIM everyone 8+, as part of their Classic Treasures Season. The play is directed by Guy Holland and co-designed by Sofie Guerrero, Jo Paul and Guy Holland, with composition and musical direction by Paul Ayres and lighting design by Tony Gleave.
The cast of SINK OR SWIM includes Christopher Tajah as Dum, Valda Aviks as Mad, Sofie Guerrero as Bubba and Dan Potts as Gabby.
In this witty modern spin on the story of Noah’s Ark, a family bicker and banter as they try to cope with life on their boat. Along with their mute daughter who remembers those left behind and a huge assortment of animals they ponder life before and after the unending rain; will people live in harmony? Will there be an end to cruelty? Will lions be vegetarian?
Giant images of animals, birds and paradise are painted live throughout the show and fill the stage with a riot of colour, accompanied by a live piano and vocal score.
Mike Kenny is one of the UK’s most prolific playwrights for children. The Independent on Sunday recently named him as one of the UK’s top ten living playwrights. His most recent plays are DIARY OF AN ACTION MAN for Graeae and ONE DARK NIGHT for Theatre Centre.
Guy Holland, who founded Quicksilver, is recognised around the world as “a fervent ambassador for children’s theatre” and he has written, produced, directed and acted in many of the company’s plays over 27 years. He and Carey English will have just returned from representing Britain in the EU Theatre for Children and Young People Festival in Japan when he starts work on SINK OR SWIM.
“A fine innovative piece of theatre for children and their families”…Time Out 1994.
