Writers Guild (Welsh Committee)

As a general point, we are rather nonplused by the haste with which this consultative process is being undertaken. Might there not be benefit in having a second stage of consultation to coincide with the briefing and lobbying of the new Welsh Assembly? It seems worryingly premature to want to axe companies and redefine the whole drama map of wales before we explore avenues of further funding and support which might be forthcoming from "Y Cynulliad"

Some specific points:

We concur with the wish to explore further the creation of a strengthened Welsh language production body in North West wales which would tour a variety of work nationally

We are far less convinced by the suggestion that Clwyd Theatr Cymru deserves the role of the English Language equivalent company to serve wales with mainstream theatre. The case for ACW's preference is not set out compellingy or convincingly, and needs to be explained more fully to theatre practitioners. Writers, like other practitioners, have found Clwyd over the years to be a remote and at times unsympathetic producing company. There are no signs that this has changed with the advent of the current artistic regime.

The proposals fro new writing provisions are naturally the ones that are of the most concern to us. We agree that there is merit in the concept of one dedicated space (such as the Sherman Arena) being made available for new plays. Our main worry on this score is that the new agenda will be franchised to a single company to serve a single vision. In their very different ways Made in wales, Dalier Sylw and the Sherman itself have developed new writing and explored a variety of markets for such work over the last decade or so. We would be unhappy if increased co-operation and the laudable intent to utilise a common performing based were to lead to a dilution of this current diversity. This is the one point on which the Writers Guild would welcome a further and more detailed discussion with ACW before the new strategies are put in place
