We welcome a draft drama strategy that attempts to tackle some major problems in Welsh theatre infrastructure.
However, before making any general judgement or statement we would welcome more information on process and, especially, policy.
We are seriously concerned that the result of the strategy will be a diminution in work opportunities for professional theatre practitioners in most of Wales. Particularly, a sufficient level of theatrical activity and expertise must be maintained in the Welsh capital if Welsh theatre is to have a creative future. With regards to the reference to Made In Wales in 6.1.7 -
Since the ‘No Place To Go’ Conference in 1992 we have made it clear that a venue primarily committed to new-writing is essential to building an audience for the work and improving the quality and energy of the work itself. A closer relationship with Dalier Sylw could well be interesting in terms of the greater cross-fertilisation between Welsh and English language writers, actors and audiences that it would facilitate.
We would welcome the opportunity to discuss The Arena Theatre being a designated new-writing space and would seek artistic autonomy in presenting our work in that space on a long-term basis.
