Theatre in Wales

The latest theatre, dance and performance news

Steven Berkoff, internationally renowned author of Greek, Decadence and Kafka, and Hollywood star of Bond movies is a major backer of a new production of Welsh play Rosebud: the Lives of Orson Welles. It opens December 20th for a five week run at The Kings Head Theatre, Islington over the Christmas period through January 2006.

Author Mark Jenkins writes ‘What an honour! I’ve always been a huge fan of Steven Berkoff’s work. I saw Greek in the West End and a packed house rose to its feet with a unanimous roar of approval at the end. Quite right, too! One of the greatest contemporary plays ever staged.’

Rosebud, which had its world premiere at the Queens Hall, Narberth, won the two top prizes at the Edinburgh fringe in 2004, where Mr. Berkoff first saw it. The show went on to play in Manhattan, Toronto and theatres throughout England, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Producers of Rosebud are Andy Jordan Productions (which currently has two other shows on in London) with further financial backing from David Pierce Hughes, Pembrokeshire artist, publisher and businessman, whose company MOGO made the first Rosebud production possible.

Rosebud had been due to open for a second off-Broadway run in late November but that opening was suspended because the off-West End production opens up the possibility of a West End transfer, further enhancing the reputation of the show’s young star, former RSC member Christian McKay and its director Josh Richards, currently playing the Miller in the RSC’s Canterbury Tales at Stratford-upon-Avon.
