Arts Council of Wales Media Release

At its meeting today, Friday 19th March 1999, the Arts Council of Wales (ACW) reaffirmed its commitment to deliver a drama strategy for Wales.

Details of the final drama strategy were agreed and will be published shortly.

Members had considered the wide range of written and other responses received during the drama draft consultation which ended earlier this month.

ACW also received a representation at the meeting by members of Hijinx Theatre who had decided to accept ACW's invitation, given to all ACW's revenue drama companies, to state their case in person to memners of ACW's Council. After careful consideration, ACW's Council members agreed that provision for people with disabilities must be safeguarded, and the expertise of Hijinx Theatre in this area should not be lost to Wales.

ACW has agreed to offer Hijinx Theatre a full year revenue grant for 1999/2000 and negotiate a two year funding agreement with the company until the end of March 2001.

ACW also decided that as part of its strategy, professional community theatre should be reviewed. This issue has been raised by a number of respondents to the consultation process.

ACW has made further decisions on its draft drama strategy as a result of considering views received. These decisions will be made public in their entirety at the end of next week, after theatre organisations and funding partners affected by the strategy have been contacted.
