Writers Guild of Great Britain vote of no confidence in the Arts Council of Wales

On Monday the 8th of November, the National Executive of The Writers' Guild of Great Britain in London, passed a vote of no confidence in the Arts Council of Wales.

The WGGB believes ACW's new drama strategy, and particularly ACW's plans for new writing, to be seriously flawed as it does very little to promote Welsh playwrights and playwriting.

The WGGB does not believe that the drama strategy will "maximise employment opportunities" for Welsh playwrights as promised, and considers ACW's plans to actually be a case of ACW funding "fewer companies worse" in this area of provision.

The WGGB no longer has faith in the ability of ACW and its officers to make decisions in this area, and urges it to suspend the strategy until The National Assembly of Wales has completed its review of culture in Wales.

Since ACW continues to ignore the opinion of the WGGB and the popular will of writers and theatre practitioners in Wales, the WGGB feels completely justified in taking this action. WGGB (Cymru/Wales) will now be working
with the WGGB's officers in London to ensure that a cut in funding for new theatre writing in Wales is not the end result of a review which once promised so much more
