A Suitcase Full of Stories
|
Theatr Iolo is the only company in Wales creating theatre productions exclusively for 3 and 4 year olds and touring this work to nurseries and theatres.
Thanks to a generous grant from the Clore Duffield Foundation, the company has now introduced an exciting new strand to its work with very young children; it is currently working in three nurseries across Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan encouraging children to create their own stories (inspired by a suitcase full of fascinating objects) and then to act them out.
“Once upon a time now there was a frog and a butterfly and they were friends – and they were very good friends. And one morning there was a egg in their home. Another creature, a bird, laid it and they didn’t know what it was. “What’s that thing?” they both said ….. “ Kitty, age 4
Once all the children have created and acted out a story, each nursery will be sent a small suitcase containing copies of their stories. Theatr Iolo will then produce a professionally- illustrated book containing a selection of the stories; this will be widely distributed to nurseries, advisers, and politicians across Wales. Distribution of the book will be supported by a number of INSET sessions for teachers delivered by the company.
Theatr Iolo is delighted to have been awarded this grant from the Clore Duffield Foundation through its Small Grants Programme for Performing Arts Education (351 organisations from across the UK applied for a total of 15 grants). The Foundation’s Specialist Advisers were “particularly impressed by the age group and cultural diversity of the children involved and by Theatr Iolo’s commitment to high quality provision for this age group”.
Theatr Iolo is delighted to be developing its highly-successful work for the under fives. In addition to touring to nurseries across South and North Wales, Theatr Iolo’s first production for 3 and 4 year olds ‘Are We There Yet?’ was performed to great acclaim at festivals and theatres in Scotland, England, Belgium, Austria and Finland. Its current production ‘That’s Mine!’ is “back by popular demand” and touring to nurseries across Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan. Both productions were directed by Sarah Argent, a freelance director, who is now leading the Suitcase Full of Stories project.
