The latest theatre, dance and performance news

Sweeney Todd

Sweeney Todd Although only in it’s second year, the Academy of Musical Theatre Wales has already gathered a substantial reputation for it’s high quality of performances.

The Academy’s latest production, Sweeney Todd marks the end of year two and is due to be staged at the Riverfront studio theatre, Newport from the 10th-12th August 2006. However, this production of Sweeney Todd is unlike any other – with a cast of just eight and a grand piano centre-stage, this minimalist adaptation of the classic tale, set to Sondheim’s score, is certainly nothing like any other production.

The aim of the Academy is that every student will graduate with either a performing contract and/or a well respected theatrical agent and after last years 100% success rate it looks like this years students aren’t going to let the side down.

“This year the students have progressed beyond recognition and after a punishing schedule of performances, lessons in dance, drama and music this is their chance to shine -although Sondheim with a cast of eight is no walk in the park!” says Drew Baker-Principal of AMT-Wales and Director of Sweeney Todd.
