Sherman Autumn Season Packed with New Writing, Top Drama and Comedy

The Sherman present a season packed full of new writing, top drama and world class comedy this Autumn with highlights including the Royal Court’s first ever visit to Wales, the premiere of Orpheus, an exciting new work based on one of the most enduring Greek myths and comedy from renowned stand up comic Mark Thomas.
The prestigious Royal Court Theatre bring 93.2FM to The Sherman in their first ever visit to Wales. 93.2FM, a sharp comedy about an underground radio station is at The Sherman on Thursday 21 – 22 September. Melbourne’s Worker’s Theatre, another world-class theatre company also make their debut at The Sherman this Autumn on Thursday 5 October. Yanagai! Yanagai! is a contemporary drama fusing Austrailia’s aboriginal past with its multi-cultural present.
The top quality drama continues with Clwyd Theatr Cymru returning to The Sherman with J.B Priestly’s classic An Inspector Calls on Wednesday 8 – Saturday 11 September. The Watermill Theatre also bring The Garden of Llangoed, a Welsh romance on Wednesday 20 – Thursday 21 September, and Nuffield Theatre company present Orpheus, a new adaptation based on one of the most enduring Greek myths on Thursday 14 – Friday 15 September.
The Sherman welcomes back Hijinx Theatre Company in September with their latest offering Estella’s Fire, based on the characters of Miss Havesham and Estella from Great Expectations. Shylock will also explore another great literary character on Tuesday 12 September. Written and performed by Gareth Armstrong Shylock explores one of Shakespeare’s most controversial characters.
Ay Carmela! from Ensemble and York Theatre Royal, a darkly funny yet heartbreaking portrayal of love and loss is on at The Sherman on Wednesday 22 – Thursday 23 November. Completing the strong season of new writing and top drama is Kaahini, a contemporary look at the dreams and frustrations of adolescence using multi media, original sounds and compelling characters on Saturday 25 November.
The Sherman continue their commitment to Welsh language theatre this Autumn with Theatr Genedlaethol with Diweddgan, a Welsh language presentation of Beckett’s darkly comic ‘Endgame’ on Wednesday 11 – Thursday 12 October. Sgript Cymru will also present Hen Bobl Mewn Ceir on Wednesday 8 – Saturday 11 November at 8pm.
The Sherman welcomes a host of stand up comedians to its stage this Autumn with one of the UK’s top observational comedians Ed Byrne on Tuesday 3 October and Lenny Henry Show star Felix Dexter on Saturday 2 December. Following two sell out shows in Autumn 2006, Mark Thomas also returns with his highly anticipated new show As Used on the Famous Nelson Mandela on Wednesday 6 & Thursday 7 December.
One of the most influential figures in British dance, Richard Alston brings his company to The Sherman on Thursday 2 – Friday 4 November at 8pm. Performing a range of pieces, Alston’s new programme covers not only his lyrical but also his lighter side.
The Sherman are also delighted to take part in the Cardiff International Festival of Musical Theatre this Autumn, with Opera UK presenting A School for Lovers and El Amor Brujo performed by the original cast of Cosi Fan Tutte on Monday 30 – Tuesday 31 October.
The Sherman welcome a host of children’s theatre this Autumn kicking off with a visit from Horrible Historian Terry Deary, who will take a look at the wonderfully weird world of ancient Welsh myths: the Mabinogi on Monday 25 – Wednesday 27 September. The show will be recorded to be broadcast on BBC Radio Wales and all tickets are free. Travelling Light Theatre Company also return to The Sherman this season with the delightful Papa Get the Moon for Me which uses physical storytelling, live music and dance on Saturday 7 October.
The Autumn season comes to a close with The Sherman Theatre Company’s renowned Christmas shows for children. The Stories of Hans Christian Anderson, for the over 6’s will bring stories including The Little Mermaid, The Emperor’s New Clothes and The Princess and the Pea to life with live music and dazzling costumes and sets from Friday 24 November – Saturday 6 January.
The Happy Prince will also enchant children aged 3 – 6 with Oscar Wilde’s charming story of love and understanding which will open at The Sherman Theatre on Friday 27 October and then tour venues across Wales before returning to The Sherman for it’s Christmas run on Thursday 6 December – Saturday 30 December.
