Gwent Theatre at 30
|
This year marks the thirtieth anniversary of Gwent Theatre and the fiftieth of Gwent Young People’s Theatre, two well loved institutions with which Gary Meredith has devoted much of his career. He took over the reigns of both companies on the retirement of his mentor, the late Mel Thomas and has developed them into the successful and flourishing establishments they are today, as an actor, director and now Artistic Director.
In recognition of his work ITV Wales has produced a documentary on Gary’s life and work called My Way which will be aired on Thursday, 3rd August at 11.30pm. The programme, which is presented by Arfon Haines-Davies looks at the director – actor’s long career on the stage, in film and television and explores the major contribution he has made to the arts in South Wales and beyond.
The year has been celebrated with a feast of new productions and events with Gary working as hard as ever in ensuring the quality of work audiences have come to expect. The celebratory year continues with Gary directing a newly commissioned play by Patrick Jones entitled Sing to Me which marks another anniversary, 150 years since the composition of the national anthem, Mae Hen Wlad fy Nhadau.
