The Trial of Elgan Jones
|
12 year old boy charged with murder.
The trial starts this week.
“Theatr na n'Óg's reputation for high-quality drama aimed at children of all ages is well deserved, and this extraordinary production is undoubtedly one of its finest pieces to date. This is far more than just a play - it is a total theatrical experience in which the audience are drawn into the action in more ways than one”
South Wales Evening Post
The Trial of Elgan Jones is Theatre-in-Education at it’s best! This year’s project for Year 5 and 6 pupils brings the hard-hitting reality of life for a working class boy in Victorian society.
With his younger brothers and sisters going hungry, Elgan decides to go poaching on the rich Margam Estate. In the acres of country gardens and green woodland full of game, it seems only fair for Elgan to catch just one rabbit to feed his. But Elgan gets caught in a web of deceit and ends up being accused of murder.
The Victorian Jury is made up of children aged 9 – 11 years old. As they see the action and hear evidence, they have to decide whether Elgan is guilty or innocent. If found guilty he will be sentenced to “hang from his neck til he is dead!” or be shipped off to Australia never to see his family again.
The Trial of Elgan Jones is an interactive project for schools from Swansea, Bridgend and Neath Port Talbot. In addition to the performance the children also participate in activities at Swansea Museum. There is also a comprehensive resource pack and Cdrom for teachers and supporting drama workshops.
‘The educational value for the children was superb, far better than any book could do.’
