HANG-GLIDING MARKS INTERNATIONAL PARTNERSHIP FOR NEW WRITING THEATRE COMPANY

HANG-GLIDING MARKS INTERNATIONAL PARTNERSHIP FOR NEW WRITING THEATRE COMPANY Aberystwyth’s LUPA THEATRE - set up by playwright and television scriptwriter Lucy Gough and her partner, Duncan Gough to tour new plays in Wales - has announced its next project, a co-production with Dublin based, BDNC Theatre.

HANG-GLIDING features a double-bill of quirky, short plays: a revival of Lucy Gough’s CROSSING THE BAR, first produced to acclaim in 1994 and a new play by Antony Pickthall, THE STUNNING FLIGHT OF ARCHIBALD BONE. The co-production opens at The Pavilion Theatre, Dún Laoghaire on November 15 and then tours to Aberystwyth Arts Centre (November 20), Theatr Gwynedd, Bangor (November 22) and Chapter Arts Centre, Cardiff (November 24 and 25).

Both plays are directed by Ciarán Taylor, Artistic Director of Dublin-based BDNC Theatre, designed by Lupa Theatre co-founder and co-director, Duncan Gough and performed by a company of Irish actors.

HANG-GLIDING offers an exhilarating evening exploring the gap between life and death in contemporary and historical settings in a highly physical and visual style.

In the surreal redemption drama, Crossing the Bar, a teenage remand prisoner attempts suicide. On the cusp of life and death, he encounters a young medieval nun. Trapped in a place called ‘Dread’, the boy discovers the power of the imagination.

Baroque comic fantasy, The Stunning Flight of Archibald Bone tells the story of a charlatan inventor from the Industrial Revolution. Pursued by conned capitalists, he plans to redeem himself by taking flight above the grime on homemade wings.

Lupa director and Playwright, Lucy Gough comments, “I am delighted that Lupa Theatre’s next production is not only continuing to show-case new plays in Wales but marks a new co-operation with an exciting young company from Ireland.”

BDNC, Artistic Director, Ciaran Taylor adds, “BDNC are committed to new theatre and this co-production with a Company from Wales will enable Irish performers to work with new voices from outside Ireland and play to new audiences across Wales.”

The co-production has been made possible with funding from CCAT Wales and Ireland, the Arts Council of Wales, Wales Arts International, and Culture Ireland.

HANG-GLIDING is Lupa Theatre’s third project since the company was established in 2000. It’s most recent production was Lucy Gough’s Gryfhead, which toured to the Dublin Fringe Festival in 2004 and Wales in 2005.

BDNC Theatre company was founded by Ciaran Taylor in 2000 and has won great acclaim for its imaginative, visual and highly physical productions.
