Melville Theatre, Penypound, Abergavenny Saturday 7 October 2006, 7.30pm A rare chance to see Chekhov drama comes to Abergavenny when the European Arts Company returns to the Melville Theatre during their UK tour to present a charming collection of his short comic plays next Saturday 7th October. Featuring Richard Latham (TV credits include Casualty and Shackleton), Daniel Harcourt - who trained at the Welsh College of Music and Drama in Cardiff and who’s played in Emmerdale and Grange Hill - and newcomer Jennifer Bryden, this is a highly entertaining introduction to one of the world’s great playwrights. Anton Chekhov is best known for plays such as ‘The Seagull’, ‘The Cherry Orchard’, ‘The Three Sisters’ and ‘Uncle Vanya’ as well as for his short stories. His work is also featured on the National Curriculum for Drama and Theatre Studies. Chekhov Shorts features five short vaudeville sketches that promise to be a pleasant surprise to people who think Chekhov is about as funny as a wet weekend in Siberia: ‘European Arts Company really takes the audience by storm…a surreal performance, witty and hilarious, full of energy talent and creativity.’ - Culture Guide ‘The cast have almost as much fun as the audience…European Arts Company provides sheer entertainment but also an excellent opportunity for seeing high-quality live theatre’. International Herald Tribune European Arts Company is a National and International touring theatre company based in Kent. Earlier this year, they came to the Melville to perform ‘A Slight Ache’ & ‘The Lover’ by Harold Pinter, which was highly praised and very well received. 'When reality and imagination clash, we are reassured that the future for them is one of joyous fulfilment. And if the Arts Centre continue to give us productions of this quality, I believe the same can be said of it'. Salisbury Journal Directed by Jonathan Kemp, this production is touring the UK throughout the Autumn and is sponsored by Arts Council Wales, amongst others. Tickets are available from the Borough Theatre Box Office 01873 850805.
