Diversions dance to bring passion to Newport
|
The Riverfront will welcome Diversions back for their third visit with Shades of Passion, an international triple bill of dance, blending the international with the local and the classical with the contemporary, Diversions present a triple bill of work from Spain, the USA and Wales that takes a modern perspective on classical artists.
Up Close and Personal blends Roy Campbell-Moore’s (Director of Diversions) passion for movement with that of the still, iconic image. Projecting his photographs onto dancers draped in fashion designed couture costumes, Campbell-Moore employs carefree, expansive movements and intimate duets to further enchant the eye.
A thrilling and voracious work by Spanish choreographer Juan Carlos Garcia sets the show ablaze. Struck by Lightning is inspired by a lost Michelangelo painting the ‘Battle of Cascina’. Themes of sex and death pervade a work in which the dancers sizzle with lust and electricity.
By popular demand Diversions also revive a work from 1986 created by Jerry Pearson (U.S.A). In Our Own Image is a visually striking, tranquil work in which the dancers manipulate props and lighting.
Shades of Passion draws inspiration from a rich artistic backdrop. Up Close and Personal draws on the beauty and elegance of Mozart while In Our Own Image boasts a more modern and ambient score by the Penguin Café Orchestra, made famous in a recent advert for a major telephone company. Complementing both works is Struck by Lightning that blends imagery from Michelangelo’s lost masterpiece with music from a Verdi opera and the latest electronic sounds and production.
SHADES OF PASSION features beauty and heartache, grace and elegance and the raging fervour of love and war. In this brand new triple bill Diversions explores a whole palette of passion, from light attachments to dark obsessions.
Tickets are priced £7.50, £10 and £12 with reductions available. Please call The Riverfront Box Office on 01633 656757 to book.
