THREE LANGUAGES, TWO COUNTRIES, ONE STORY – NORTH WALES STAGE CONTINUES TO INNOVATE
Innovative theatre company North Wales Stage (Llwyfan Gogledd Cymru) is once again pushing the boundaries of Welsh theatre with their latest production, Branwen. The multimedia and multilingual production – performed in Welsh, Irish and English – will be on tour in Wales and Ireland during October and November 2006.

The play was developed as a collaboration between Welsh and Irish partners. It is directed by respected figures from the two countries (Ian Rowlands and Darach Mac Con Iomaire) and written by Darach Ó Scolaí from Ireland and Wales’s Ifor ap Glyn, one of the writers of North Wales Stage’s critically-acclaimed 2005 production, Fron Goch.

Branwen tells the story of two writers – one Irish (Stephen D’Arcy) and one Welsh (Ffion Dafis) – who are thrown together to write the script for an animated version of Branwen, a mythic Welsh tale found in the Mabinogion. During the course of their work the two become Celtic lovers and several secrets are revealed about their relationship and about the nature of the relationship between their two countries.

Just like Fron Goch, Branwen features multimedia techniques in order to enhance the theatrical experience. Technology is used to provide subtitles where needed, and to bring an alternative dimension to some elements of the plot. The technology is therefore an integral part of the production.

Ian Rowlands, Artistic Director of North Wales Stage explains: “As a company we aim to provide entertainment as well as a full theatrical experience for our audiences. We are continually looking for ways to collaborate on productions and to work innovatively in order to bring a new dimension to the theatre in Wales.

“There is a clear parallel between the story in the play itself and the process used to develop the production, which was to unite Welsh and Irish experiences and outlooks. We are confident that this is reflected in the final work and that Branwen is a very real and honest production.”

The play toured Ireland during October 2006. The Welsh leg of the tour will begin in Theatr Gwynedd, Bangor on 8 November, before moving on to Cardiff, Llanelli, Pwllheli and Harlech.
