The Marriage of Figaro by Tara Arts
|
Tara Arts return to Theatr Mwldan on Monday 27 and Tuesday 28 November with The Marriage of Figaro, a classic drama that crackles with humour and burns with playful yet serious sexuality!
The Marriage Of Figaro is a rarely staged theatrical masterpiece from the pen of the revolutionary writer Beaumarchais, first performed in Paris in 1784. It is a sublime social comedy and biting satire originally based on the French aristocracy.
Tara Arts transports this classic tale to 18th Century India in a zesty adaptation by Ranjit Bolt. With snappy characterisation, lewd humour dressed up as polite speech, nimbly contrived action and ruthless mockery of smug, autocratic power, this is a real treat.
In the late 18th Century the world is changing, the old is crumbling and the new is emerging. In India the Mughal Empire is dying, just as the absolute monarchy is dying in France. The Marriage Of Figaro is the story were the common man seeks to triumphant over nobility.
This bawdy comedy follows Figaro, butler to a small-time Rajah, who is to marry the girl of his dreams. But can he find a way to stop the Rajah from exercising his ancient right to consummate the marriage of his servant? Figaro devises a plan to outwit his master and has to employ all his wiles to keep the Rajah’s mind on the business at hand. The result is great comic confusion among the plotters!
It took six years for Beaumarchais to get this subversive play staged, and the French revolution followed five years later. Such a play in the Mughal Empire would have had you skinned alive!
