HOUSE OF AMERICA BY EDWARD THOMAS
A rehearsed reading Directed by DEAN DAMJANOVSKI
(NATIONAL THEATRE OF MACIDONIA)
House of America, as the best-known play to come out of Wales and one that represented a new wave of state-of-the-nation plays, was an obvious choice for this On the Edge season. In keeping with most of the rest of the season, a non-Welsh director was asked to take a fresh look at this seminal play - and what better than someone from a region that, like the UK, has seen devolution raise anew questions of national identity... the countries of the former Yugoslavia.
The invitation to Dean Damjanovski was a result of David Adams, theatre critic and curator of the State of the Nation season attending, at the behest of the British Council, the International Critics' Colloquium as part of a theatre festival in Novi Sad, Serbia, where he was asked to speak on Welsh Theatre and Nationalism. While there he met with various critics and practitioners from The Balkans and from this emerged Identity Exchange, a Collaborative Project between Wales and The Balkans; He project director and Theatr Iolo is the principle Wales partner. The first stage, made possible by ACW and WAI, is the development of collaboration with Macedonia, with Dean Damjanovski being invited here and Kevin Lewis. Artistic director of Theatr Iolo and David Adams invited to Skopje next year; similar collaborations with other countries will be explored over the coming year and it is hoped to have a major Balkans festival here in 2009.
Dean will not only be directing House of America but will be running workshops in association with the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama and participating in various symposiums on theatre and national identity where the Welsh and Macedonian experiences will be explored and recorded in a book to be published some time in the new year.
Damjanovski is a freelance theatre Director – In Macedonia he has his own company “No Name Theatre” Recently directed “ Don Juan” by Moliere for National theatre at Veles in Macedonia and also “Hamlet for beginners” based on texts on Hamlet for National Theatre of Bitola, Macedonia He has run an Eastern European Theatre project at Queen Margaret College in Edinburgh, and is at present working on a joint project about life of Tito with participants from 6 European countries and India and Egypt.
