Moving House

Moving House Following its sell-out run at the Mansion House in Swansea, Volcano's REASONS TO BE SILENT is moving north to Mold.

Just about everyone enjoys the chance to nose around a big posh house, and next week Volcano is taking over the stately but crumbling Victorian residence of Bromfield House in Mold and inviting people in to explore its nooks and crannies from the cellar to the attic. Reasons to be Silent is a unique show which encourages you to sneak into the Servant’s Bedroom, stalk through the Butler’s Pantry, stride into the Drawing Room and shuffle up the stairs.

But this is no ordinary guided tour. Using video, music, words, special effects and live performers, Volcano has transformed the house so that each room or feature becomes a unique sensory experience. Armed with a torch, a map and an audio guide, visitors will explore at their own pace and make their own discoveries. The show works a bit like a conversation between the house and the visitors – each part of the house presents itself in an unusual way to the visitor, and each visitor brings memories and associations of rooms and houses they have known and lived in.
"I’m speechless!! Absolutely amazing, so powerful. Full of emotion, power, atmosphere and tension. What a beautiful house and outstanding performance. Bravo." Audience member, Swansea

The eerie atmosphere of Bromfield House has clearly got to Volcano, for this is not the roller-coaster ride of loud, sweaty excess that people may have come to expect from the company. Expect a gentler experience, albeit one that reaches into dark and troubled corners. The house, already an impressive pile, will reveal strange new beauties to complement and contrast with the obvious charms of its faded grandeur, rustic fireplaces, and quarry-tiled floors. It will be full of surprises, but will also be a place for quiet contemplation. This is a great opportunity for people to visit and explore what is usually a private piece of the town’s heritage, and a refreshing change from an evening spent in a theatre seat.

Reasons to be Silent is presented in association with Clwyd Theatr Cymru, with the kind permission of Christopher Hall Estate Agents, and with the assistance of the Theatre & Performance Department at NEWI.
