PLAID CYMRU ARTS SPOKESPERSON SUPPORTS DRAMA PROTEST

Elin Jones AM, Plaid Cymru - The Party of Wales' spokesperson on cultural issues today called on the Arts Council of Wales (ACW) to suspend its strategy for new theatre writing. She has questioned Tom Middlehurst, Assembly Secretary with responsibility for the arts in Wales, on the issue and requested that the minutes of the meeting that decided not to suspend the controversial new writing plans be made publicly available.

Speaking in support of the protest held by Made in Wales Drama Company outside the ACW headquarters in Cardiff today, Ms Jones said:

"I have heard numerous concerns regarding the levels of openness and accountability of the ACW. It is responsible for making decisions which impact significantly on the lives of many people and it is widely felt within the arts community that these decisions aren’t justified in public or to the applicants. There is a very clear case of a lack of confidence in the current Arts Council administration. I am calling on ACW to suspend this strategy, pending the results of the Post-16 Committee’s review of arts and culture, which has been underway since January."
