Dear Ms Wymark It is with dismay that I read your letter on the Welsh Theatre website. As you know, the Sherman Theatre was invited to submit an application/bid for the new writing franchise by ACW. In our presentation to the assessment panel, of which you were a member, we made it very clear that we had asked Dalier Sylw to put in a joint bit with us. They refused. You however, chose to tell the world a different story - that we did not want to work with Dalier Sylw or Made in Wales - I quote "The Sherman Theatre made it clear that they were unwilling to work with either of the two companies as their premises would not accommodate this." How dare you choose to misinterpret what had happened and then make your opinion public. This has done nothing but damage the situation here in Wales. You were a representative at the meeting of the Writers Guild. As you know, the Sherman Theatre has commissioned and produced some 109 new plays in the last 10 years, and your in appropriate action is not just damaging to the Sherman Theatre Company's bid, but also to all the writers we have and will continue to work with. How dare you masquerade your opinion as fact. We, the theatre workers in Wales, fought hard and long to get an independent advisor onto that panel. The ACW agreed it should be a member of the Writers Guild. What good has it done us when you have made public your opinion as fact, which is indeed a complete untruth? I do hope you will make this situation good, explaining your action to the Writers Guild, the ACW and the theatre practitioners of Wales. We too are professionals. We too make our daily living from new writing. You have done us a great disservice at a crucial time in the development of new writing in Wales. Yours sincerely PHIL CLARK Artistic Director/Chief Executive Cc: Writers Guild of GB Writers Guild of Wales ACW Website Welsh Theatre |
