UK Premiere Of Philippe Boesmans’ Julie at Theatr Brycheiniog, Brecon
Philippe Boesmans’ Julie performed by Music Theatre Wales will open its national tour on Saturday 26 May at Theatr Brycheiniog, Brecon.
Boesmans and his librettist Luc Bondy have based their intimate chamber opera on Miss Julie, Strindberg’s classic 1888 drama of destructive passion between mistress and servant.

Julie, sung in English in a translation by Anna Herklotz and designed by Simon Banham, is scored for an orchestra of eighteen players and three singers.

Michael McCarthy, the director of Julie, said: ‘This production will introduce British audiences to the operas of the Belgian composer Philippe Boesman for the first time.’

‘Although Boesmans is a major figure in mainland Europe,’ - his four operas have an impressively successful track record across the Channel – ‘he is virtually unknown on the British operatic stage,’ he continued.

‘Boesmans’s music is highly individual. His style is dense and precise, rich and colourful, elegant and imagistic, and in this piece, he makes a chamber ensemble of eighteen players sound positively symphonic.’

Julie was originally a co-production between La Monnaie in Brussels (where it premiered in March 2005 and where Boesmans has been composer in Residence for nearly twenty years) and the Festival d’Aix en Provence.

An associate company of the Royal Opera House in London since 2002, Music Theatre Wales has premiered its two previous productions – including House Of The Gods in 2006 – at Theatr Brycheiniog in Brecon. This year, the premiere will also form part of the prestigious Hay-on-Wye Literary Festival – a significant new association.

Julie by Music Theatre Wales is at Theatr Brycheiniog on Saturday 26 May at 7.45pm. Tickets cost £15.00 (£13.00 concs) and are available from the box office on 01874 611622.
