ACW announces the new writring franchise

Dalier Sylw is to set up a new bi-lingual theatre writing centre for Wales committed to developing new plays in English and Welsh. This is announced by the Arts Council of Wales (ACW) today (Thursday, February 17).

Three ACW revenue-funded companies - Dalier Sylw, Made in Wales and the Sherman Theatre Company - were invited to bid for the running of the centre in October last year.

ACW has asked Dalier Sylw to open discussions with the Sherman Theatre about moving the proposal forward with a view to establishing a platform for new writing commissioned under this initiative. ACW will be providing £170,000 towards supporting the initiative which also reflects a broader aim of building bridges between presenters and producers throughout Wales.

"This strategy was developed out of one of the largest consultation processes we have conducted, " says Joanna Weston, Chief Executive of the ACW.

"We are deeply concerned, of course, that the available funding forced the need to discern between three new writing companies, each of whom could, in their own terms, deliver what we required with our new centre.

"However, we had to make our decision in relation to what our budget could afford. The proposed centre, we believe, will now act as a fresh focus for new writing.

"We shall also be ensuring a breadth of opportunity to develop and produce new writing with all the companies we support through revenue funding. This will be achieved through commissions, residencies, and bursaries for new playwrights, in addition to the proposed output of this new centre."
